"My parents really instilled in us this concept if
you want something, then you have to work for it."
Anthony Gordon Shadrach, was born in Brampton, Ontario in 1966. He is the youngest of four boys. His father was born in Dominica and his mother was born in Trinidad.
We first met Gordon at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair at Nathan Phillips Square in 2019. It was so exciting to see Black faces and bodies in beautiful antique frames. Gordon says he identifies as a Black artist when asked because representation matters.
Gordon shared that as a Black gay male, he was not always comfortable in Black communities."I was very aware that I was different and very aware when people picked up on that difference." Doing art that brought him into Black communities where he has been welcomed so openly has been a way of connecting.
